With conservation focused on meeting globally set targets for effective marine protection, it is critical to understand how additional forms of spatial management are used to enhance and add to marine protected areas conservation goals. One often overlooked management tool for marine conservation buffer zones. Buffer Zones are widely applied within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) but drastically under assessed in terms of definition, functionality, objectives and targets. This study will look into the complexities of buffer zones within marine ecosystems in order to better assess the benefits they may provide, while creating a more defined definition, and to benefit objective setting in marine conservation and decision making.
