Assessment of nutraceutical potentials of phytochemicals obtained from edible/medicinal macrofungi

Title: The Evaluation of The Antimicrobial And Nutraceutical Property of Trametes Species Collected From Araromi, Ondo State Nigeria.

The aim of this research work is to evaluate the Antimicrobial and Nutraceutical potentials of the mushroom Trametes species collected from Araromi, Ondo State, Nigeria. Phytochemical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of ethanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane extract were carried out. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of pharmacological constituents such as: flavonoids; tannins, terpenoid, saponin, steroid and cardiac glycosides. Extractive value was high in Ethanol extract when compared to other solvent extracts. The antibacterial activity of the extract was conducted using well agar diffusion method on four clinical bacterial isolate which are identified using various standard biochemical tests. The extract shows activity on: Escherichia coli (19.00mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21.00mm), Staphylococcus aureus (24.00mm) and Bacillus cereus (25.00mm) at 100mg/ml respectively. Antioxidant property of the extracts was assessed using scavenging effect on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Ethanol extracts exhibited better antioxidant property with values as high as 85.88% followed by extract of ethyl acetate and extract of n-Hexane (81.72% and 67.91%) respectively at 2mg/ml compared to control butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) with the scavenging effect of 87.97%. The extracts displayed concentration dependent DPPH scavenging activity. The study suggests that this wild macrofungus could be source of new bioactive compounds with effective antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.
