My research involves the application of lectins in the proteomics analysis of serum and urine samples from patients with prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Thus far, I have identified several protein fragments in the sera and urine of patients with PCa that were differentially expressed compared to those with BPH as well as the controls. These proteins are potential biomarkers that may be used in the early diagnosis of PCa as well as to differentiate it from BPH. These promising serum and urinary biomarkers, if validated at epidemiological scale, may be used together with others, including serum prostate specific antigen, for selection of patients to be subjected to prostate biopsy thus, reducing the high number of unnecessary biopsies performed to detect PCa as well as avoiding unnecessary medical complications.
