To investigate the consequences of using social capital by women, its impact on the gender gap.
For Pakistani women ‘Khandaan’ (family, family status) and ‘talluqatt’ (family networks, social connections) are resources which like ‘wasta’ in the Middle Eastern culture can be used to give or gain favors. The study reveals that majority of the women used their Khandan and Talluqat in different ways to be at the key positions and apparently a positive move has negative implications too; it still does not reduce the gender disparities because women with strong connections and affluence are limited in numbers, and second, it creates another barrier for many deserving women who lack ‘social capital’.
