Understanding the underlying mathematical structure of our universe

My area of research is at the interface between mathematics and physics. Currently, the strongest candidate for a theory that explains everything in our universe is either M-theory, which is 11-dimensional, or F-theory, which is 12-dimensional. However, our real world is clearly 4-dimensional (three spatial dimensions plus time). Therefore, we need to understand how to "get rid" of the other extra dimensions. The primary goal of my research is to understand how to reduce these higher-dimensional theories to our real world, and in doing so, give rise to the rich and intricate structure that is found in nature.
