THIS IS ABOUT USING BENEFICIAL MICROORGANISMS TO COMBAT A DEADLY POTATO DISEASE, EARLY BLIGHT

I 'M A PLANT PATHOLOGIST IN THE FIELD OF AGRICULTURE WHICH IS AN AREA THAT DEALS WITH THE STUDY OF PLANT DISEASES, THEIR CAUSES,THEIR SYMPTOMS, MODE OF SPREADING AND THEIR CONTROL. I FOCUSSED ON DEVELOPMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCES TO CONTROL DISEASES OF PLANT IN ORDER TO AVOID OR REDUCE EXCESSIVE USE OF SYNTHETIC CHEMICALS WHICH ARE HAZARDOUS TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND VERY EXPENSIVE. THE RESEARCH I WOULD PRESENT, GRANTS APPROVED FOCUSSED ON THE USE OF SOME BENEFICIAL MICROBES USUALLY ISOLATED FROM SOIL AND USE TO CONTROL SOME PLANT DISEASES. THE MICROORGANISMS USED WERE TWO BACTERIA (BACILLUS THRINGIENSIS AND PSEUDOMONAS FLUORESCENS & A FUNGI, TRICODERMA VIRIDE. THEY WERE APPLIED SINGLY AND IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS TO THE POTATO SEED TUBERS, AFTER ISOLATION AND PURIFICATION, TO CONTROL ONE OF THE SERIOUS POTATO DISEASE CALLED ALTERNARIA LEAF BLIGHT. THE DISEASE IS BOTH SEED AND SOIL-BORNE AND SPREAD RAPIDLY TO THE FIELD AFTER PLANTING THE TUBERS. IN THIS RESEARCH WE PREPARE THE SOLUTIONS OF THESE BIOAGENTS AND TREATED THE TUBERS SO AS TO ACQUIRE A SYSTEMIC RESISTANCE AGAINST THE DISEASE AFTER PLANTING. THE RESULTS OF THE WORK SHOWED THAT THE CONSORTIUM TREATMENT OF TRICHODERMA VIRIDE AND BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS GAVED HIGHEST EARLY BLIGHT DISEASE SUPPRESSION (30.76%, DISEASE INCIDENCE) AND HIGHEST YIELD OF POTATO AT HARVEST (2.78 THA-1). THE MIXTURE OF TRICHODERMA VIRIDE AND PSEUDOMONAS FLUORESCENS REVEALED HIGHEST GROWTH PARAMETERS (22.5CM, SHOOT LENGTH) AND HIGHEST INHIBITION OF ALTERNARIA SOLANI UNDER IN VITRO CONDITION (97.48%). THE STUDY INDICATES THAT SEED TREATMENT WITH COMBINATION OF TRICHODERMA VIRIDE AND PSEUDOMONAS FLUORESCENS AND THAT BETWEEN TRICHODERMA VIRIDE AND BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS CAN BECOME PART OF INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF EARLY BLIGHT DISEASE OF POTATO AND PLANT GROWTH PROMOTING.
