Thermal reactions of dialkyl disulfides with acetylene in the presence of methanol

Gas-phase reaction of diethyl disulfide or “disulfide oil” with acetylene performed in the presence of methanol provides an essentially more selective thiophene formation. The yield of thiophene increases by 20–30%, and the yield of by-products decreases by half.
