Abstract

•Sen (2017) contains a new proof of Arrow’s impossibility theorem.•The proof assumes that the social preference relation is fully transitive.•Sen’s “Spread of Decisiveness” lemma can be used to prove Gibbard’s oligarchy theorem.•This lemma requires only quasi-transitivity.•Arrow’s theorem follows immediately once transitivity is strengthened.
