In 74 cases the underlying disease was benign choledochus or papilla; in 6 cases, carcinoma of the choledochus; in 19 cases, tumors of the pancreas, and in 2 cases, gastric carcinomas. Postoperative mortality was 8.9 % in the malignant and 2.7 % in the benign cases. The average age was 72 years. Marked icterus was present in more than 60 %.
