•A framework that categorizes teacher’s responses to all students’ offers is proposed.•Three response situations are identified within the framework: breakdown, sophistication, and individuation/collectivization.•Hierarchies and relationships between categories within situations of elaboration is explored.•The framework provides a model for thinking about developments in responsive teaching.
