Intravenous contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is associated with significant in-hospital morbidity. Numerous studies examining various contrast agents and the risks of CIN have identified associated risk factors. A body of literature has emerged identifying strategies to reduce the incidence of CIN in at-risk patients. On the basis of the recently published clinical trial data and guidelines from the major radiologic societies, we developed an algorithmic approach to CIN prophylaxis in hospital inpatients.
