Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant named ‘Duepotcapu’, characterized by its compact, mounding and outwardly spreading to trailing plant habit; freely branching habit; early and freely flowering habit; large light brown-colored flowers; and good garden performance.

Description

Botanical designation: Petunia×hybrida.

Cultivar denomination: ‘DUEPOTCAPU’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant, botanically known as Petunia×hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Duepotcapu’.

The new Petunia plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Rheinberg, Germany. The objective of the breeding program is to create new compact Petunia cultivars with numerous unique and attractive flowers.

The new Petunia plant originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in July, 2007 in Rheinberg, Germany of a proprietary selection of Petunia×hybrida identified as code number T06-1648-007, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with a proprietary selection of Petunia×hybrida identified as code number T06-4404-001, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Petunia plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Rheinberg, Germany in May, 2009.

Asexual reproduction of the new Petunia plant by terminal cuttings in a controlled greenhouse environment in Rheinberg, Germany since May, 2009, has shown that the unique features of this new Petunia plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Petunia have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment and cultural practices such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Duepotcapu’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Duepotcapu’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia:

    • 1. Compact, mounding and outwardly spreading to trailing plant habit.
    • 2. Freely branching habit.
    • 3. Early and freely flowering habit.
    • 4. Large light brown-colored flowers.
    • 5. Good garden performance.

Plants of the new Petunia can be compared to plants of the female parent selection. Plants of the new Petunia differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in flower color as plants of the female parent selection have yellow-colored flowers. In addition, plants of the new Petunia are more compact than plants of the female parent selection.

Plants of the new Petunia can be compared to plants of the male parent selection. Plants of the new Petunia differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in flower color as plants of the male parent selection have white-colored flowers. In addition, plants of the new Petunia are more compact than plants of the male parent selection.

Plants of the new Petunia can be compared to plants of the Petunia×hybrida ‘Keiyeyas’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Rheinberg, Germany, plants of the new Petunia differed primarily from plants of ‘Keiyeyas’ in the following characteristics:

    • 1. Plants of the new Petunia were more compact and had shorter internodes than plants of ‘Keiyeyas’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Petunia had larger flowers than plants of ‘Keiyeyas’.
    • 3. Plants of the new Petunia flowered earlier than plants of ‘Keiyeyas’.
    • 4. Plants of the new Petunia and ‘Keiyeyas’ differed in flower color as plants of ‘Keiyeyas’ had light yellow-colored flowers.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photograph and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown in Rheinberg, Germany, under commercial practice during the summer in 10.5-cm containers in a glass-covered greenhouse with day and night temperatures averaging 18° C. and light levels averaging 4,500 lux. Plants were pinched one time three weeks after planting and were 16 weeks old when the photograph and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

1. A new and distinct Petunia plant named ‘Duepotcapu’ as illustrated and described.
