On the ratio of local and energy criteria of unstable cleavage fracture of cold-resistant steel

Abstract

A new approach for prediction of cleavage fracture of the material in contrast to the standard local criteria of fracture in microvolume and the “weakest link” concept was proposed. It is based on the application of the energy criterion of fracture, investigation of the prefracture zone, and results of the X-ray structure analysis of the cleavage fracture surface. The possibility of using such an approach for the evaluation of the influence of the scale effect on the measurable crack resistance was shown.
