Mathematical reconstruction of the ecological disaster in the Sea of Azov

Abstract

The reconstruction of the ecological disaster in the Sea of Azov—the formation of the huge anaerobic zone in 2001—was carried out. The reconstruction was performed on the basis of mathematical models of hydrodynamics and suspension transport for shallow water basins. It is shown that the main reason of such phenomena is the stable structures of water currents in the eastern part of the Sea of Azov. These currents were predicted theoretically and then their existence was confirmed experimentally. The results of numerical simulations obtained with a parallel computing system are in a good agreement with the expeditions’ findings and with other experimental data
