Abstract

•Post-buckling response is investigated on the beams confined by movable and flexible constraints.•A novel algorithm is developed to discretize the movable and flexible confinements into gap vectors.•A static and dynamic stability analysis is conducted based on large deformation theory.•An energy method is introduced to minimize the total energy with respect to the gap vector using a modified Nelder-Mead algorithm.•The theoretical results of the presented model are compared with existing models and experiments.•Parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect of the loading and constraints conditions on the post-buckling response of the bilaterally confined beam.
