Abstract

Short-term experiments were performed on cats and prolonged ones on dogs. It was established that in “unstrained” experimentally-induced closed pneumothorax intensive respiratory movements were performed by the lungs. Pneumothorax causes compensatory expansion of the thorax by reflex mechanism which acts from interoceptors of the pleura and lungs on the tone of the respiratory muscles.Reflex regulation of the average volume of the thorax and the ratio of the volume of the thorax to that of the lungs is postulated.
