Two macrophage subpopulations were isolated from peritoneal exudate exhibiting quantitative and qualitative differences in their oxygen radical production. The amount of O2− and H2O2 secreted by the two subpopulations and the original population was independently modulated during cultivation time. These investigations revealed also that thioglycollate-elicited macrophages could be present in different functional states with regard to secretion of proteases and a protease inhibitor.
