Developments in major procedures available in the literature relating to elastic settlement of shallow foundations supported by granular soil are presented and compared. The discrepancies between the observed and the predicted settlement are primarily due to the inability to estimate the modulus of elasticity of soil using the results of the standard penetration tests and/or cone penetration tests. Based on the procedures available at this time, recommendations have been made for the best estimation of settlement of foundations.
